Summer Bummer

Posted by Exer on Thursday, July 1st, 2010

We’ve been having rain, rain and more rain the past couple weeks. Looks like it may be a typical wet Alaskan summer. Not that I should be all that bothered by it, since I’m not actually working outdoors at the moment. What do I really have to complain about, mowing the grass too often? I [...]

Alaska isn’t always a winter wonderland, covered in feet of snow. We are a green, green state, for a few amazing months of summer.

Puppy Tales

Posted by Exer on Thursday, June 10th, 2010

OK, well he isn’t exactly a puppy anymore, but that doesn’t stop me from calling him “pup” every now and again. Whenever my mom stops by to visit she calls him “grandpa”, but that’s just because she is evil and likes to pick on helpless animals. Yup. Anyway, here is my PUP out enjoying the [...]

Don’t Bug Me

Posted by Exer on Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

This little lady decided to land on my brothers hand while we worked on his car in the driveway. She wasn’t in any hurry to fly away, so we grabbed a camera and decided to try out the macro lens.

If You Musk

Posted by Exer on Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Every day is a lazy day for a muskox at the Alaska Zoo. It must be a lonely life. I went with my cousin, who kept saying things like “They want to be free!” every time we would reach a new exhibit. It annoyed me at the time, but looking back on the photos I [...]

Too Cold To Snow?

Posted by Exer on Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

It’s too cold to snow.“  Those are words I’ve used countless times.  On certain days and at certain temperatures, that phrase is an undeniable truth — in my humble opinion.  Scientifically speaking though there is no such thing as “too cold to snow”.  The details don’t interest me, to be honest.  I’m no scientist or climatologist.  I’ve been in Alaska for about 10 years now, and one thing I can say without question is that the colder it gets, the less snow that falls.

And of course when I think of “snow”, I think of an accumulation of the stuff that I would have to move around with the power of a shovel and a glass of hot chocolate.  I really don’t much care about a light dusting.

We are finally on the climb out of a week or two of frigid temps here in Anchorage, where I don’t think it ever got warmer than 10 degrees.  And we got no snow during that stretch.  Now that the temps are rising again — if you can call 20′s and 30′s “rising” — and sure enough we get a couple inches last night, with the weather calling for snow every day for the next week or so.  So yeah, perhaps ‘too cold to snow’ isn’t technically true, but it is true enough for me that it makes no difference.  It will be my back aching after shoveling this stuff up, not some scientist in a nice warm lab somewhere.

Hmmm…..I always thought if the temps were very low it wouldn’t snow either LOL The few times it reaches low 30′s here in Florida, its not surprising to hear “There might be snow flurries”

Pfffft. but I haven’t seen it happen yet in all the 15 years I’ve been here.

I read the last paragraph to Jesse, about the 10 degrees and no snow (without him seeing anything else written, or anything else about the post) and first thing he says “Too effin cold to snow!” LOL so you’re not the only one who has that theory. Nice to have something to read again, been checking. Miss you a lot, josh. Hope you have a nice thanksgiving!
