It Is Finally Over
Well I’m happy to announce that as of yesterday I have officially sent out the last of my court issued checks. I’m done! Out of 5 weeks of Jury Duty I earned about 750 dollars. I didn’t get to keep a cent of it either (had to turn it into payroll at work) but I got paid more by my job in exchange, so I can’t complain. I’m just happy its over. Very happy.
I hate to say this — because I’ve always taken pride in doing my part — but I don’t think I’m ever going to be sending back one of those ‘jury service’ letters I get in the mail. I’ve served twice now in 10 years, and while that doesn’t seem like a big deal, I know people who have been here 40+ years and have yet to serve even once. Seems a little unbalanced and unfair to me. I’ve responded to two of those jury summons and I’ve been picked for both, so I think I am officially retiring myself.
I’ve done my civic duty, nobody can say otherwise.
Oh and speaking of my ‘civic duty’, if you’ve never served on Jury Duty you have no business telling me what is or what isn’t my ‘civic duty’. I was telling a few co-workers about my decision to avoid court in the future at all costs and one woman gasps out, “You can’t do that! It’s you civic duty!”. She is 15 years older than me. I asked her if she has ever served, she says “No, but I would!”. First of all, don’t speak about what you don’t understand. Experience it a few times then come talking to me about my ‘duty’. I hate people trying to give me orders or advice about things they’ve never done themselves.
