Summer Bummer

Posted by Exer on Thursday, July 1st, 2010

We’ve been having rain, rain and more rain the past couple weeks. Looks like it may be a typical wet Alaskan summer. Not that I should be all that bothered by it, since I’m not actually working outdoors at the moment. What do I really have to complain about, mowing the grass too often? I [...]

Alaska isn’t always a winter wonderland, covered in feet of snow. We are a green, green state, for a few amazing months of summer.

Puppy Tales

Posted by Exer on Thursday, June 10th, 2010

OK, well he isn’t exactly a puppy anymore, but that doesn’t stop me from calling him “pup” every now and again. Whenever my mom stops by to visit she calls him “grandpa”, but that’s just because she is evil and likes to pick on helpless animals. Yup. Anyway, here is my PUP out enjoying the [...]

Don’t Bug Me

Posted by Exer on Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

This little lady decided to land on my brothers hand while we worked on his car in the driveway. She wasn’t in any hurry to fly away, so we grabbed a camera and decided to try out the macro lens.

If You Musk

Posted by Exer on Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Every day is a lazy day for a muskox at the Alaska Zoo. It must be a lonely life. I went with my cousin, who kept saying things like “They want to be free!” every time we would reach a new exhibit. It annoyed me at the time, but looking back on the photos I [...]

Crabs Are Clever

Posted by Exer on Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

So I get home from work yesterday, and my brother is in a panic.  It seems he thinks his crabs are going to die.  For anyone who doesn’t remember, he has 3 pet hermit crabs (not the one pictured), and for the past couple months he has been trying to figure out how in the world the crabs have been going through so much water.  He has been needing to fill their 2 water bowls every day…

Well it turns out the crabs are pretty smart. They’ve dug out an elaborate set of underground tunnels into the sand, and in the very center of the tank (still underground) they have created themselves a nice little lake.  This quickly explained where all the extra water has been going, but my brother was worried that all the water (which was seeping into all of the other tunnels and sleeping caves the crabs have made) was going to drown his poor shelled friends.

So he calls me over to his room, and says:

“Hold the lid up for me please?  I need to get this water out, not sure if it is bad for them or not…”.

I walk over and see him reaching into the tank:Me:  “Uhh… is that my turkey baster?”

He says:  “Yeah, I couldn’t think how else to get the water out.”

Me:  “The one from the kitchen, that I use to cook with?”

He says:  “I’ll clean it real good when I’m done…”

Me:  “Noo no, you keep it.”

He says:  “You sure?”

Me:  “Oh yes, very sure.  I’ll just pick up a new one.”I

have no doubt he would have cleaned it real well, but I just can’t see ever again using something on my dinner that had previously been full of sandy, crab pond water.  Yeah, that just isn’t appealing. The funny thing is, I did a little research and it turns out that turkey basters are recommended as a very cheap alternative to more expensive tank cleaners, especially for fish tanks.  I think I’m going to be making a trip to pick up a few of these things!
